Apple's new macbook pro models have upset many people for many different reasons. But i find that putting it in under an angle works better:

I have applecare for this mac, but i believe it's about to expire (bought for christmas 2012, apple care was for three years iirc) and i also live in puerto rico, so there are no apple stores here.
Macbook pro sd card slot won't work. What could the issue be? The card reader on it is for sd cards right?. Imac (mid 2011 and later)
For me sticking the sd card in and pulling it a bit out again ( just a few mm ) seems to get it mounted. Try to access content stored on an sd card using the inbuilt sd card reader. Perhaps it's a manufacturing defect and that adapter wasn't 'cut' right.
On my 15 mbp early 2011. Apple is taking a lot of flack for its decision to drop the sd card slot from the new macbook pro range and outfit it with thunderbolt ports only, but the company is confident it’s made the right. As well and that didn't work either?
The sd card slot becomes a hidden device (in device manager) and upon examination of it's properties it says the device is no longer. It should be going label up with the sandisk portion going into. Make sure the contacts on the sd card are clean, use a clean pencil eraser and lightly rub the gold contacts.
On all macbook air (and macbook pro) notebooks running windows (regardless of version) via a bootcamp partition, the sd card slot invariably disappears whenever the macbook goes through a sleep/wakeup cycle. The macbook air and 2015 and later macbook never included an sd slot.) desktop macs with a card slot, like an imac, use the pcie bus. There's even a video that explains how to put it in and pull it out a bit here.
Why the new macbook pro doesn't have an sd card slot but does have record orders apple's phil schiller on why they deleted the sd card slot on the new macbook pro 2016. Macbook air (mid 2011 and later) mac mini (mid 2011 and later) mac mini (mid 2010) doesn't support sdxc cards. But the sd card slot still won't work.
My work around so far has been to use an old imac to read the sd cards without any problem and then send the files from the sd card by mail and open them on my macbook pro with 10.13.1. The sd cards are fully functioning on any mac not updated to high sierra, except on my macbook pro after the update to high sierra. The sd card won't fit into my 13 macbook pro, its too big. An sd card slot just works:
From that pic, it looks correct. And i pine for the traditional usb slots on the macbook pro that i use to insert external hard drives, charge the iphone, plug in my microphone for.
